Writer, Creator, Consultant

My name is Amy, and I tell stories.

My bestselling book How Do You See Us? is about being an African American family in America, my feelings of vulnerability, and how it got this way.

As an author, creator, lecturer, educational consultant, and diversity/inclusion/anti-racism advocate. I speak on the demands of school and sports, especially facing Black students. Having raised three successful student-athletes, I understand the issues facing student-athletes at all levels.

Graduating with honors from the University of California, Berkeley with a Bachelor of Arts in Afro-American Studies and Social Sciences I focused on raising my family, and later returned to the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Education for a Master of Arts researching the intersection of athletics and academics. I have served on the Cal Parents Board, the University of California, Berkeley Library Advisory Board, and the Cal Heritage Fund, and on boards and committees on diversity and inclusion.

I live in Oakland, CA with my husband of 30 years, former NFL player Hardy Nickerson. We have three adult children, Ashleigh, Haleigh, and Hardy, Jr.
